Sunken Treasure Ships in the Algarve Coast

Finding sunken treasure ships has been every divers dream.

Finding a virgin and untouched shipwreck is a dream of all sunken treasure ships divers.

Many wrecks have been located by divers just exploring different areas or hearing out the tales of local fisherman in what comes up in their nets.

Many sunken treasure ships are still to be found and I’ll be listing a few sunken treasure ships in the Algarve coast, although there are probably thousands of shipwrecks in these waters and i´ll be writing more on them as my continual search for information on them progresses.

The following list is only a few of the most know sunken treasure ships.

There are still hundreds of shipwrecks and many of them sunken treasure ships just in the Algarve waters alone!

HMS Resistance - British 36 gun, loss in 1803 that wrecked on rocks near Cape St. Vincent with unknown cargo.

Isabella – Spanish galleon, 600 tons, loss in 1672, bound West Indies to Spain, sunk 8 km offshore of Cape Santa Maria with an estimated cargo of $750,000 in Peruvian and Columbian gold.

Llancarvan - British steamer, 4,910 tons, loss in 1943, bombed by German aircraft near Cape St. Vincent with unknown cargo.

La Nuestra Senõra De Las Mercedes - Spanish galleon, loss in 1804, bound Montevideo to Cadiz, Spain attacked by a British squadron 30 miles of Cape Santa Maria. Sunk offshore of Cape Santa Maria with an estimated cargo of $1,000,000 in gold and silver pesos as well with sailors payments.

La Nuestra Senõra De La Concepcion - Spanish galleon, 120 tons, loss in 1566, bound Dominican Republic to Spain sunk 2 miles of Cape St Vincent with unknown cargo value in gold and silver.

La Nuestra Senõra Del Rosario - Spanish galleon, 500 tons, loss in 1600, bound West Indies to Spain, sunk off Cape Santa Maria with unknown in gold that was mostly salvaged at the time. Some gold still probably left to be found.

San Francisco - Spanish galleon, 100 tons, loss in 1596, bound Dominican Republic to Spain, sunk in unknown location in the Algarve coast with unknown cargo value in gold and silver.

La Nuestra Senõra De La Misericordia - Spanish galleon, loss in 1594, bound Puerto Rico to Spain, sunk of Lagos with unknown cargo value in gold.

Pedro Diaz - Spanish galleon, loss in 1608, bound Buenos Aires to Spain, sunk of Lagos with unknown cargo value in silver that some has washed on shore few years after the sinking.

La Nuestra Senõra De Las Angustias - Spanish galleon, loss in 1617, bound New Spain to Spain, sunk of Portimão with cargo of gold and silver.

Santo Cristo y Las Animas - Spanish galleon, loss in 1670, bound Cuba to Spain, sunk of Sagres with unknown cargo value in gold.
